Nothing is as fun as meeting with the whole family in front of the sofa, popcorn completely popped, snacks on the coffee table and everyone chasing down for the family movie night. Now most family movies are usually animated or involve puppets, but for the upcoming movie night you have chosen a good selection of action movies to help the week's stress just melt away!
Wait what? Action movies? Are you serious? Sure, what's wrong with a cool action tab that the whole family can enjoy, right? Well, that's where the biggest problem lies with most action movies - they're not very family friendly. The last thing you want to do is keep telling the kids to cover their eyes because of violence or more mature content, and you really don't want to start a whole dialogue about the salty language used. But action movies are so cool! Why can't they make this kind of exciting movie for everyone? It turns out they do.
Unfortunately, that direction will not pay out if you hoped for a real list. You must understand that every family is different, and as such, the focus is really on you and your significant other & how you choose to make decisions in your home. That said, before jumping straight into the latest jungle-blowing girl or the best in security damage to an entire capital drama, you can come up with some guidelines for choosing a movie that is appropriate.
Here are some things to keep in mind when choosing an action movie for your family's next movie night:
Know the ages you work with - MPAA has established guidelines for ages and levels of appropriate content in films. All in all, it is actually a really solid system to work with.
Have a good handle on how well your children can handle certain content - Content here can be anything from language and mature material to language. It can also depend on how well your children can handle dramatic stories without catharsis.
Animated or not? - This is actually more for the parents. You want to watch a movie, but do you want to watch an animated movie? For family movies, there are not many options, but over the years, movie producers have tried to put in some good jokes for mom and dad to help get them through multiple screenings.
Do some online research and read reviews - There are general reviews to check out, as well as entire websites dedicated to families looking for suitable movies for all ages. They are detailed and are fantastic resources.
Is the movie night at home or in a theater? - If you are at home, you might be able to play a little fast and loose with MPAA ratings, but if you are at a movie theater you may think that theaters are quite serious about creating an environment that is comfortable for all moviegoers. As such, if the family movie night hits the road this week, call the theater in advance to check the policies.
Action movies are not necessarily the usual choice for a family movie night, but there are movies out there that may fit the bill. There will be some level of compromise on everyone's part because it may not be the complete representation of what an action-packed movie can deliver, but just remember what is actually most important - you hang out as a family.
